Social Science

About the Program

The University of Wyoming's bachelor of arts or sciences in social science (distributed major) gives students a multi-disciplinary approach that allows flexibility in selecting courses from a variety of areas. Upon graduation, students will have gained a broad knowledge of the liberal arts.

Courses in a variety of different areas count toward the degree. Major areas of concentration in the social science program include:

  • ANTHROPOLOGY

  • CHICANO STUDIES

  • COMMUNICATION AND JOURNALISM

  • CRIMINAL JUSTICE

  • ECONOMICS

  • GEOGRAPHY

  • HISTORY

  • PHILOSOPHY

  • POLITICAL SCIENCE

  • PSYCHOLOGY

  • SOCIOLOGY

  • WOMEN'S STUDIES

(Some categories are not frequently available through the Outreach School.)

Courses are offered using a variety of delivery methods including the latest in audio and video technology, correspondence study courses, Internet, and on-site instruction.

Students must earn 48 credit hours drawing from at least four of the 15 areas listed above with a minimum of 15 credit hours in one area and six credit hours in each of the other three areas. Taking electives in any of the eight departments may fulfill the remaining 15 credit hours. The hours in the major must include STAT 2070 or 2050. All 48 hours in the major must result in grades of C or better. Before entering the outreach program, students must finish their lower division requirements at a community college or university.
