Dick McGinity Assumes UW Presidential Duties
Richard McGinity began performing the duties of the President of the University of Wyoming on November 14, 2013, following the resignation of University President Robert Sternberg. Dr. McGinity is also serving the University of Wyoming as Interim Vice President of Academic Affairs, a position he has held since September of 2013.
In the role of Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs he was responsible for the academic operations and employees of the University. With the resignation of the President, he also assumed all duties of the President, pursuant to University Regulation 1-1.
Dr. McGinity has been Bill Daniels Chair of Business Ethics at the University of Wyoming since 2007.
In addition to serving as a UW faculty member his public service includes over seven years as a director of the Wyoming Business Council, including Co-Chair in 2004-2005; three years as member of the finance committee of the Town of Wellesley, Massachusetts; and five years as a naval aviator during which he served in Vietnam, earning two air medals.
Richard McGinity served on the research faculty of Harvard Business School where he wrote numerous case studies, co-authored (with Ray A. Goldberg) a book about economic development and agribusiness, and wrote his doctoral dissertation on competition in the meat packing industry from 1945 to 1960.
After earning his undergraduate degree from Princeton and graduate degrees (MBA, DBA) from Harvard, Dr. McGinity pursued a career in venture capital and private equity: first as a partner in a Boston-based venture capital fund and then founder of a boutique investment banking firm which served owners of private firms seeking to build enterprise value through growth, acquisitions, and equity transactions.
Dr. McGinity has served on the boards of numerous privately-owned and publicly traded companies, most recently Canada Southern Petroleum Ltd., where as Chairman he led that company’s successful defense against a hostile takeover attempt by Petro-Canada.
Dr. McGinity maintains a residence in Crowheart, Wyoming. He loves being in the wilderness on horseback and is a licensed professional guide.
