Welcome from President Nichols

president nichols head shotWelcome to the University of Wyoming! Founded as the land-grant and flagship university for Wyoming, we boast breath-taking beauty and feature high elevations and high quality of life.

Founded in 1886, we are a major teaching and research university, with approximately 13,000 students, 700 faculty members, and over 200 programs of study.

Throughout its existence, the University of Wyoming has been the only public four-year university in Wyoming, though it has maintained a close relationship with the state’s community colleges. UW combines major-university benefits and small-school advantages. With a faculty to student ratio of 1:14, students experience small class sizes, affording easy access to faculty. Faculty members are internationally renowned for their research and scholarship and are innovative and creative teachers.

Based in Laramie, the university is highly engaged with the state of Wyoming through an expanded outreach program and 10 regional educational centers. In addition, Agricultural Research and Extension Centers are scattered throughout the state. The University of Wyoming at Casper, UW's branch campus, offers a small campus experience in central Wyoming.
