WY State Legislature Internship

Undergraduate and Graduate Students!

The Wyoming Legislative Internship Program is a great opportunity for students to assist state legislators in the Wyoming Legislature’s upcoming 2023 General Session.  The 2023 General Session lasts for 8 weeks and starts on January 10, 2023.

Students can earn up to 6 POLS credit hours during the spring semester depending on 1) the number of hours worked in the internship, and 2) a successful supervisor evaluation from the Legislative Internship Coordinator at the end of the internship. The Legislative Office requires a minimum of 10 hours a week at the State Capitol in Cheyenne to participate. Interns working 10 hours a week can earn up to 3 academic credit-hours, and working 20 hours a week earns up to 6 academic credit-hours.  More credit can be negotiated for working more than 20 hours a week.

Interns perform a variety of tasks for the legislators, including researching issues, writing memos and briefs, and responding to constituent emails. Interns also participate in seminars and educational opportunities, including special visits with state leaders and attending committee meetings.  Financial aid is also available (see attachment).

For more information see the various attachments to this email.

Interested students must schedule a meeting with the SPPAIS Intern Supervisor, Dr. Taggart, to begin preparing their application and to register for credit.

Application steps:

  1. Meet with Dr. Taggart
  2. Prepare application materials
  3. Submit materials to the Wyoming legislative office by November 25, 2022.

Application materials:

  1. Legislative Internship Application (Attached)
  2. SPPAIS Internship Agreement and Syllabus (Attached)
  3. Your full 2023 Spring Academic Schedule

Final applications are due on Friday, November 25, 2022 and should be emailed to donna.shippen@wyoleg.gov.  For any other general questions contact Dr. Taggart at gtaggart@uwyo.edu or come by my office in the A&S building (#328).
