WCET/WICHE

                                         

WCET has a long and successful history in fostering collaborative projects, information sharing, and networking among some of the country's most established and innovative postsecondary institutions. WCET was founded in 1989 by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE) to meet a growing need to integrate distance learning and educational technology into the academic services of higher education institutions in the western region. From our western roots, the work of WCET has grown to serve members across the U.S. and Canada. WCET has grown into 385 institutions and organizations located across the U.S. and internationally. Our members are dedicated to improving the quality and reach of technology-enhanced teaching and learning in higher education. The State Authorization Network (SAN) is a WCET membership based subgroup which guides, supports, and facilitates collaboration of its members to understand and apply state and federal regulation compliance requirements for institutions’ out of state activities. WCET members are eligible to obtain an annual membership with a separate fee to SAN as an individual institution, consortium, or system. A membership in SAN through a consortium or system does not provide the benefits of WCET until the SAN member obtains its own WCET membership. The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education is a regional organization created by the Western Regional Education Compact and adopted in the 1950s by Western states. WICHE was created to facilitate resource sharing among the higher education systems of the West. It implements a number of activities to accomplish its objectives.

WICHE began operations in 1953 in Eugene, OR, moving to its present location in Boulder, CO, in 1955. WICHE is governed by three gubernatorially appointed commissioners from each member. Under terms of the compact, each member commits to support WICHE's basic operations through annual dues established by the full commission.

WICHE's members include 15 Western states and member U.S. Pacific Territories and Freely Associated States (which currently include the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands and Guam).

The Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education and its 16 members work collaboratively to expand educational access and excellence for all citizens of the West. By promoting innovation, cooperation, resource sharing, and sound public policy among states and institutions, WICHE strengthens higher education’s contributions to the region’s social, economic, and civic life. WICHE programs—Student Exchange, the WICHE Cooperative for Educational Technologies, Policy Analysis and Research, and Mental Health—work to find answers to critical questions facing higher education today. WICHE’s 16 members include Alaska, Arizona, California, Colorado, Hawai‘i, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, New Mexico, North Dakota, Oregon, South Dakota, Utah, Washington, Wyoming, and the U.S. Pacific territories and freely associated states (the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands is the first of the group to participate).
