Study Abroad Safety

Before you depart you should:

  1. Familiarize your self with health and safety information.  Visit  Students Abroad.

  2. Visit the Center for Disease Control to see what vaccinations you will need.

  3. Get your visa - if required (

  4. Research your country of study and familiarize yourself with both current events in the United States and in your destination country.

  5. Make photocopies of your passport.  Always have a copy of your ID with you while abroad, but keep your passport somewhere safe.

  6. Student Travel Insurance is mandatory.  Students on exchange programs will be enrolled in UW insurance.  Students using program providers will be covered under that insurance.

  7. Do you know the electrical conversions for your country of study? The U.S. uses 110/120; most other countries use 220/240. Plugs are also different, so do your research!

  8. A mandatory pre-departure orientation will take place at the end of the semester before your departure.

  9. Consider taking the INST 2200 Study Abroad Preparation Course.  This one credit hour course is taught during the spring semester.

  10. Before leaving, you must enroll in the Study Abroad (UWYO 4000 or 4001) course.  You will be given specific instructions, including the CRN at the pre-departure orientation.  It is your responsibility to make certain that you are enrolled for full-time credit in this course (12 hours for undergraduate students; 9 hours for graduate students).  Your financial aid and scholarships can be applied to your study abroad program, but if you are not enrolled for full-time credit, you will not be eligible to receive this money.
