Earn Your B.S.N. in Just 15 Months Through UW

Want to become a registered nurse? UW's Bachelors Reach for Accelerated Nursing Degree (BRAND) is an accelerated Bachelor of Science (B.S.N.) option for students with a previous non-nursing baccalaureate degree who desire to become registered nurses. This option is a ‘summer to summer’ format with a full-time schedule of courses.

BRAND, offered through the Fay W. Whitney School of Nursing, is not only an accelerated but also a distance program. The program delivery allows WY’s rural and isolated hospitals and agencies to grow their own B.S.N.-prepared nurses without relocating the student (or the student's families) to Laramie.

BRAND's 15-month 'summer to summer program includes online learning, hybrid courses and hands-on clinical experiences. The intensive curriculum focuses on didactic and clinical nursing education. BRAND requires a motivated, independent and self-disciplined learner.

About Our Accelerated Nursing Program

Students living in Wyoming do NOT need to relocate to Laramie for the program.

The first (summer) semester has the most on-campus time in Laramie for the program. The time on campus consists of 4-5 days every other week for approximately 6-7 weeks. Housing can be arranged with the UW dormitories. The remainder of the program does not require as much on-campus time but still requires a full-time workload of courses.

Theory courses are both online and hybrid (a combination of online and face-to-face). The hybrid face-to-face portions utilize current internet technology to deliver real-time interaction with the instructors on a routine basis. Students will need a headset and microphone for their computer as well as dependable internet access.

The BRAND Program tries to work around Wyoming's winter weather and distances by using current technology to reduce travel requirements. Acute care clinical experiences are face-to-face with instructors onsite. There are several locations utilized around the state. Students will complete 1080 hours of hands-on clinical experiences in the program.

Students relocating to Wyoming to attend the BRAND program are encouraged to consider Casper because it is a central location and offers a variety of clinical opportunities. Students may live in close bordering states but must live close enough to WY to easily and safely travel to clinical experiences.

The fall and spring semesters have clinical groups of 6-8 students in different healthcare agencies around Wyoming.

Acute care clinical sites are provided in the fall. Locations that have been used in the past include Casper, Evanston, Gillette, Jackson, Wheatland, and Rock Springs. Other sites may be added depending on the numbers and locations of students. The core foundational clinicals are hands-on experiences with onsite instructors.

Community health clinical experiences are offered in the spring and will be hands-on experiences with a preceptor and faculty oversight. Some community health clinical experiences must be attended in both Evanston and Lander for 40 hours each, and students will also attend a clinical experience in either Casper or Gillette for 60 hours. All other community health clinical experiences in the spring semester will be arranged in a WY location closest to the student's residence.

The final (2nd summer) semester contains a capstone clinical experience. Students will be placed in a WY acute care agency on a full-time basis for the entire final semester.

Transfer Evaluation

As part of the BRAND nursing major application process, transfer coursework will be evaluated by the School of Nursing to determine the transfer equivalency of required prerequisite courses. Evaluation will also take into consideration the School of Nursing Program Scholastic Requirements.. A School of Nursing transcript evaluation fee will be assessed at that time and paid online.

The UW Registrar's Office completes an evaluation of students' transcripts following their admission to the University. Their office determines whether or not courses are found to have UW equivalencies and/or University Studies (USP) attributes. Pending approval/clearance on all transfer discrepancies by both the School of Nursing and the Registrar, students' transfer evaluations are considered unofficial. The Registrar is the official evaluator, and the School of Nursing further determines which courses are then applicable to the nursing curriculum. Evaluations processed by the School of Nursing are subject to change until they have been determined to be official.

BRAND Program FAQs

We believe our BRAND program is truly one-of-a-kind, offering students an excellent fast-track to a nursing career. To help clear up any confusion, we've provided answers to a few common questions below. Please contact us if you want to know more!

Is BRAND an online program?

No. The first summer students spend approximately every other week in Laramie for on-ground classes. The following fall and spring semesters the students are required to be in a clinical location in the State of Wyoming approximately 2 weeks out of each month. The final summer semester each student does their senior residency in a location in Wyoming that is chosen by the instructors of the program.

Do my prerequisites still count?

The BRAND program only has a statute of limitations on two prerequisites: PHCY 3450 and PHCY 4470; they must be completed within three years of the May start date.

How long is the program?

The program starts in May and finishes in August of the following year: 15 months (4 semesters).

When do I need my CNA license?

A copy of your CNA license must be on file in the BRAND office by May 1, before classes start, even if you are an EMT.

I really enjoyed the autonomy that we were given in this program. I felt the learning experiences were available to a multitude of learning styles that suited us as individual students. I enjoyed that time on campus was clustered and we were able to work from home when it was necessary.
