Campus Construction Update for Week of Aug. 16

Lewis Street between 10th and 11th Streets is closed to traffic.

These are among the construction activities scheduled at the University of Wyoming during the week of Aug. 16-22:

Lewis and 10th/11th Street Closure --  Lewis Street is closed between 10th and 11th Streets to be used as the staging areas for the Cowboy Dorm ( log building west of Earth Sciences Building) and Old Power Plant deconstruction.

9th Street Closure -- The City of Laramie has nearly completed a major reconstruction of 9th Street from Grand Avenue to Lewis Street. 9th Street is scheduled to reopen soon.

The UW Physical Plant has scheduled the following activities scheduled for the week:

Steam Shutdown -- Restoration of the campus steam system has been delayed beyond the scheduled Aug. 16 date. UW physical plant reports that due to a conveyor belt problem, steam is now tentatively scheduled to be restored late on Monday Aug. 17. All buildings will be back to normal operation by the morning of Tuesday, Aug. 18, with the exception of Fine Arts and the swimming pools. The pools will be heated and back to full operation by the end of Wednesday, Aug. 19.

Fine Arts Center -- Steam will remain off to the building to replace a defective heating coil. There will be no hot water in the building until the coil is replaced. The coil will be installed this week.

Washakie Dining Center -- The temporary steam boiler will be removed around Aug. 18 and the area will be reopened.

Lewis Street -- The concrete and asphalt work on 14th Street at the corners of Lewis and Bradley are complete.

Concrete and Asphalt -- Sidewalk replacement west of Half Acre and the Wyoming Union will begin this week and continue until Aug. 21. Work areas south of Half Acre and west of the Union will be blocked to pedestrian traffic. Concrete replacement at Physical Sciences (northeast side) should be complete by Aug. 18 and reopened for use around Aug. 20. ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) modifications on the west side of Aven Nelson will begin this week and be complete when 9th Street reopens.

Several areas north of the Corbett Building are blocked for ADA work and sidewalk replacement.The north entrance to Corbett is closed. Please enter on one of the other three sides. This work will continue through this week. ADA modifications will begin at the west entry to Fine Arts this week and continue next week. The entrance will remain open, with barricades placed around work areas.

15th and Ivinson Streets -- Concrete work is complete and access has been restored.

Geology Building -- Reconstruction of the parking lot east of the Geology Building continues. Access to the north of Geology will be rerouted to the north entrance of the Earth Sciences Building, then through the building to the connection between Geology and Earth Sciences. Access to the west side of the Engineering Building and the east side of Geology will remain open and unchanged. Scheduled reopening is Aug. 24.

Health Sciences Building -- Pedestrian access only has been restored to the east side of the building. Temporary pedestrian access to the south entrance will be maintained. Landscaping and the installation of handrails will continue this week. Work will begin at the Health Sciences west entrance this week and continue for about two weeks. The west parking area will be closed during this construction. Alternate handicap parking is available east of Geology and north of Lewis, next to the TransPark Building. Exterior light replacement east and west of the building continues.

Knight Hall -- An ADA ramp has been constructed at the east entrance to the building. The east entrance will be open around Aug. 20 after the handrails are installed. Please use the south or north entrances to the building.

Wyoming Union -- A concrete slab will be place on the south side of the Union Monday, Aug. 17. The area will be opened for use around Aug. 19.

Classroom Building -- Masonry work to repair the planter on the south east corner of the building will begin around Aug. 17 and complete around Aug. 21. Work areas will be barricaded.

Physical Sciences Building -- Masonry work to repair the planter on the north west corner of the building will begin around Aug. 17 and complete around Aug. 21. Work areas will be barricaded.

McIntyre Hall -- Masonry work is in progress and will be finished around Aug. 21. All other work is complete.

Parking Lot Striping -- Striping the lot east of the Arena Auditorium is complete. Handicap parking spaces and crosswalks around campus will be painted for the rest of this week. Crosswalks will be painted one lane at a time and traffic will be routed around the new paint. Striping will begin in the alley between Knight and Ross Halls. Please use caution when driving around these work areas.

Fraternity and Sorority Mall -- The steam system repair is complete.

Campus Greenhouse -- Steam system replacement work is on hold, waiting for materials and will continue through September.

Engineering Building -- East entrance from Lewis Street will have one of the double doors blocked off to reset the threshold. The southwest handicap entrance will be closed temporally to reset the threshold. Work will be complete around Aug. 21. Minor remodeling and painting is in progress in the lobby at the entrance to the Dean's office. Painting on sixth floor is complete.

War Memorial Fieldhouse -- Electrical work has been completed. Roof replacement continues on the south side of the building. The staging area is on the west side of the building. Please use caution when entering from the south and around the staging area.

Ross Hall -- Re-roofing of the building continues. The staging area is on the north end of the east stairwell. Material movement will occur between 5-7 a.m. in between Ross and Knight Halls. Please use caution around the building area.

Animal Sciences/Molecular Biology Buidling -- Painting will begin in the Meat Laboratory and continue through next week.

The UW Facilities Planning Office reports the following activities scheduled for the week:

College of Business Expansion and Renovation (Scheduled completion: Fall 2010) -- Masonry work will continue on the exterior. Roofing work has begun on the addition. Installation of the windows on the south side will begin during the week. Mechanical and electoral rough-ins are progressing on the upper three levels. Gypsum board installation is proceeding in the basement. Flooring tile installation will begin in the original building.

ILLC, Information Library and Learning Center (Scheduled completion: Sept. 2009) -- Landscape work will continue east of the Wyoming Union and on the south side of the building. Finish work is proceeding on the ground level of the 70s portion of the building. Mechanical and electrical rough-ins as well as metal framing will be occurring in the basement and ground floor of the original building.

Student Health/Cheney International Center -- Work on the project is almost complete. Programs are in the process of moving in. Furniture arrives in the next two months. Exterior landscape is being installed.

Berry Center -- The general contractor has mobilized and construction area fencing is in place. Deconstruction of the remaining WRI storage units and the Cowboy Dorm The access to 9th Street will be from the west on Lewis Street when 9th Street is reopened the first part of the week.

WRI Building Removal -- The Western Research Institute buildings east of the Bureau of Mines Building and west of Cowboy Dorm are being moved to prepare for Berry Center construction. There will be intermittent closures of the service entrance on Lewis Street, as the remaining buildings are loaded on a trailer and removed. Building No. 8 on the east side of the service entrance will be moved by Aug. 16. Building No. 5 on the west side of the service entrance is being prepared for removal and a date will be provided when it is ready to be moved. Please use extreme caution when using the service entrance on Lewis Street.

War Memorial Stadium Expansion and Improvements (Scheduled Completion: Fall 2010) -- The East Stadium parking lot will be closed through Aug. 24. Steel erection will continue this week and repairs on lower steel stands ongoing. Webcam view available here.

Information Technology Center -- The furniture installation is mostly complete. A few items will be arriving in the up coming weeks. The audio/visual training will occur Monday and Tuesday. The basement work has been completed and inspected. Only a few punch list items remain. New shelving will arrive and be installed this week. Exterior landscaping is complete except for some minor repair items to the irrigation and sod. The goal post will be returned to the recreation field unless the Recreation Department makes other arrangements.

College of Law, Moot Court Addition and Renovation -- Work is complete on the main project. Additional landscaping is currently being installed. Furniture is being installed.

UW Police Facility -- The Police Department has moved into the new facility. Punch list items will be complete in the next few weeks.

Lewis Street Apartment Removal -- Apartments at 1111, 1113, and 1115 E. Lewis Street are prepared for removal by the contractor. The first building was removed from the site Wednesday, Aug. 5, and another building will be removed in the coming week. Announcements regarding parking on Lewis and 11th Streets will be provided as soon as the second removal date and time is determined. Please use caution on Lewis between 11th and 12th Streets.

Engineering (Scheduled Completion: Aug. 24 ) -- The first floor restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor will be available.

Biosciences Building (Scheduled Completion: Aug. 24) -- The first floor restrooms will be modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor are available. The south wing of the second floor will have restricted access for construction workers only. This will not affect access to the second floor restrooms.

Physical Sciences Building (Scheduled Completion: Aug. 24) -- The first floor restrooms are being modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms on the second floor are available.

Ross Hall (Scheduled Completion: Aug. 24) -- The first floor restrooms are being modified to increase accessibility. Restrooms near the elevators and on the second floor are available.

Centennial Complex -- Exterior block repair is complete. Block cleaning, sealing and caulking is tentatively scheduled for late August. Staging for the contractor is on the northeast side of the building.

General Classroom Renovations Phase 2 (Scheduled completion: Aug. 21) -- Classrooms being renovated this summer include Bioscience 217, 218, 219, 220 and Engineering 1045, 2112, 3108, 3109, 3110, 3111, 3112, 3114. Staging area will take up four spaces behind the Engineering Building. HVAC and electrical work is ongoing. Painting will continue in Engineering Building and Biosciences Building this week, crews will work nights and weekends.
