UWyo MagazineUWAA Scholarship Recipient Spotlight

May 2014 | Vol. 15 No. 3

Scholarship recipient Tayln Costello comes from a long line of UW graduates. She’s trying to pack enough experiences into her UW career to match all of theirs put together. During her first semester, Costello completed courses such as chemistry, calculus, Honors Colloquium, Introduction to Engineering and Introduction to Problem Solving. She works 20 hours a week helping the Cowgirls basketball team at practice and doing other tasks. She’s involved with a church, takes part in community service and tutors students in calculus. Tayln does all of this while keeping focused on her goal of becoming a petroleum engineer with a business focus.

Coming from Pinedale, Wyo., Costello says the engineering field attracted her because of its prominence there. So she visited local engineering firms to learn what the career involves. “It is everything I love: teamwork, leadership, communication, problem solving and working with people. It is a great fit,” she says.

Over the next few years Costello hopes to intern with a company during the summers as she works toward her degree and professional engineering license. “I don’t want to work for others my whole life,” she says. She intends to own a business that combines her engineering training with the business skills she’s learned in part from observing her parents in their work. Costello says she loves Wyoming’s core values of integrity, working hard for what you want and being an honest, good person. And she is grateful to UWAA for their support of students. “It is because of them we have such rich tradition!”
