Math Counts

Middle School: Math Counts

The MATHCOUNTS Competition Series is ideal for students who have a talent and passion for math who need to be challenged. Students will engage in exciting, "bee-style" contests in which they will compete against and alongside other bright, motivated students. At the local, state and national level, students win hundreds of thousands of dollars in scholarships and prizes every year. MATH (Updated 1/2015)

FIRST Robotics Competition

High School: FIRST Robotics Competition (Grades 9-12)

"The Varsity Sport for the Mind," FRC combines the excitement of sport with the rigors of science and technology. Under strict rules, limited resources, and time limits, teams of 25 students or more are challenged to raise funds, design a team "brand," hone teamwork skills, and build and program robots to perform prescribed tasks against a field of competitors. It’s as close to "real-world engineering" as a student can get. Volunteer professional mentors lend their time and talents to guide each team. ROB (Updated 1/2015)

FIRST Tech Challenge

Middle - High School: FIRST Tech Challenge (Grades 7-12)

FTC is designed for students in grades 7-12 to compete head to head, using a sports model. Teams are responsible for designing, building, and programming their robots to compete in an alliance format against other teams. The robot kit is reusable from year-to-year and is programmed using a variety of languages. Teams, including coaches, mentors and volunteers, are required to develop strategy and build robots based on sound engineering principles. Awards are given for the competition as for well as for community outreach, design, and other real-world accomplishments. ROB (Updated: 1/2015)

FIRST Lego League

Elementary - Middle School: FIRST LEGO League (Grades 4-8)

FLL introduces younger students to real-world engineering challenges by building LEGO-based robots to complete tasks on a thematic playing surface. FLL teams, guided by their imaginations and adult coaches, discover exciting career possibilities and, through the process, learn to make positive contributions to society. ROB (Updated 1/2015)


Elementary-Middle School: Cheyenne FIRST LEGO League Teams

STARBASE hosts FIRST LEGO League Teams from August until December. Wyoming STARBASE Academy, Department of Defense Youth Program, has operated in partnership with the Wyoming National Guard and Wyoming Military Department since 1994. STARBASE serves, free of charge, fifth grade public, private, and home-school students in Laramie County, Wyoming. Through team-work, students participate in challenging "hands-on, mind-on" activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM), interact with military personnel to explore careers and make connections with the "real world". Team America Rocketry Challenge

Middle - High School: TARC - Team America Rocketry Challenge (Grades 7-12)

An extra-curricular hands-on project-based learning program, the TARC competition is modeled around the aerospace industry’s design, fabrication and testing processes. All students participate in a team of 3-10 students to design, build, and fly a rocket. Like aerospace companies work within specific design parameters, every year the challenge requires teams to achieve the same basic mission-oriented goals of hitting a precise altitude, landing within a specific flight time window, and returning a raw egg (”the astronaut”) without cracking. Middle - High School: Wyoming State Science Fair (UW)

High School: The Junior Science and Humanities Symposium (JSHS) for Wyoming and Eastern Colorado

The JSHS gives high school students the opportunity to present their scientific research work in front of an audience in much the same way as they would at a professional science meeting. With only slides, overhead, Power Point or backboard they let the audience know what they have done in their chosen research area. STEM (Updated 1/2015)

NASA Rover

High School - College: NASA Human Exploration Rover Challenge (formerly the NASA Great Moonbuggy Race)

For the competition, students are required to design a vehicle that addresses a series of engineering problems similar to problems faced by the original Moonbuggy team. Each Moonbuggy must be human powered and carry two people, one female and one male, over a half-mile simulated lunar terrain course including craters, rocks, inclines, and "lunar" soil. The Moonbuggy must be carried to the course starting line and be contained in a volume of 5'x 5'x 5' – dimensions similar to those for the original Lunar Roving Vehicle. At the starting line, the Moonbuggy is assembled and the race begins. The race is held in Huntsville, Alabama at the U.S. Space & Rocket Center. ASTRO, ENG (Updated 1/2015)


High School: Wyoming Awards for Aspirations in Computing (NCWIT) (Grades 9-12)

Award recipients are selected for their aptitude and interest in IT and computing, solid leadership ability, good academic history, and plans for post-secondary education. COMP (Updated 1/2015)
