Academic Year 2024-2025 Instructional Memo
The University is committed to retaining and promoting faculty whose work achieves a high standard of excellence and who demonstrate through the performance of their duties a commitment to professionalism and to the core university mission. One of the purposes of academic tenure is to retain a faculty best qualified to help execute the core university mission of advancing knowledge and educating students. Information provided below will help faculty navigate the tenure and promotion process.

Instructional Guides
Academic personnel in tenure track appointments must chronicle their scholarly achievements, teaching accomplishments, service and outreach/engagement endeavors, and extension activities (where appropriate in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources) in a comprehensive portfolio.

Academic professionals and non-tenure track faculty on extended term track and extended-term will be reviewed following the review schedule outlined in UW Regulation 2-4.
Extended-term track
Required reviews for academic professionals and non-tenure track faculty in an extended-term
track occur in years 1, 2, 4, 6; options to skip years 3 and 5.
Extended-term
Required reviews for academic professionals and non-tenure track faculty on a six-year extended-term occur in year 5 of the 6 year term. Beginning AY 2019-20, all year 5 reviews will be for consideration of a new 3-year or 5-year fixed term. Successful candidates will complete their final year of their extended term before beginning the new fixed-term.
All current academic professionals and non-tenure track faculty on extended-term appointments
will retain their current designation and rank for the duration of their extended
term. A request for change in designation may be made concurrent with the next fixed-term
review. The change in designation will be made concurrent with the new fixed-term.

Non-tenure track faculty on academic appointments with an annual or multiple year fixed-term (with no rolling contract) must be reviewed annually and prior to reappointment. There is no university level review by the University in the promotion path for non-tenure track faculty on annual or multiple year fixed-term (with no rolling contract). Unit and/or college standards for promotion will govern promotion requirements and the contents of the review portfolio.
Non-tenure track faculty on academic appointments with or eligible for fixed-term with rolling contracts must keep a comprehensive record of their accomplishments.
First-year review - completed after first fall semester
Second-year review - completed during annual review in accordance with unit and college procedures
Fixed-term review - during third year of probationary period
Review for rolling a contract forward - completed during annual review
Decisions regarding fixed-term with rolling contract, promotion in rank, and rolling
a contract forward shall follow a thorough performance review as described in Standard
Administrative Policies and Procedures, as well as college and unit procedures.
