Dr. Whit Stewart is an Associate Professor and Extension Sheep Specialist in the Department of Animal Science at the University of Wyoming. His academic appointment encompasses research, teaching, and extension/outreach, with each area synergistically informing and enhancing the others. Dr. Stewart leads an interdisciplinary, systems-based program focused on advancing the sustainability, productivity, and resilience of the U.S. sheep industry. 

His research spans the full life cycle of lamb and wool production—from breeding, health, and nutrition to product quality, value-added processing, and market innovation. By integrating animal science with natural resource management, Dr. Stewart highlights the importance of both ecological stewardship and the communities who manage and depend on working landscapes. 

His extension programming is grounded in collaborative, producer-driven approaches that prioritize timely, relevant, and practical solutions. He delivers outreach through diverse methods including traditional media, digital platforms, one-on-one consultations, seminars, and peer-to-peer learning—empowering producers and enhancing knowledge exchange across the industry. 

As an educator, Dr. Stewart is dedicated to student development and workforce readiness. He teaches several undergraduate and graduate courses, including ANSC 4230 (Advanced Sheep Production), ANSC 3535 (Introduction to Wool Evaluation), ANSC 3540 (Collegiate Wool Judging), ANSC 4500 (Lamb-A-Year), and ANSC 5880 (Special Topics – Lamb Feeding Systems). He also mentors graduate students and serves as faculty advisor to the UW Collegiate Wool Growers and coordinator and coach of the UW Intercollegiate Wool Judging Team.
