Wyoming Gallery
We Live in Silence is the inaugural film held in the Art Museum’s newly converted Wyoming Gallery – now a dedicated film space. Zimbabwean artist Kudzanai Chiurai’s (b.1981) 2017 film is comprised of seven tableau-vivant images in response to filmmaker Med Hondo’s critically-acclaimed drama Soleil O (Oh, Sun). The format, recreating scenes from the film interspersed with other visual culture, allows Chiurai to dissect the colonialist narrative Hondo presents in his depiction of a Black immigrant in 1960’s Paris. Chiurai’s transformation of the original film imagines new futures in which people of African descent are not subject to understanding the world through the language and norms of colonizers while it also challenges gender bias.
