Cosmic: Works from the Collection

January 21 – May 13, 2023

The night sky is a source of wonder, inspiration, questions, and answers. Humanity has long looked up at the stars to try to make sense of our world; we continue to adventure into the cosmos in search of life and a better understanding of our place in the universe. The Art Museum invites visitors to explore 22 cosmic works ranging from 16th-century anthropomorphized depictions of the planets to commemorations of the 1969 moon landing, and depictions of astronomical phenomena from photography to abstract painting.

This exhibition is curated to coincide with the Art Museum’s 2023 Cosmic Ball on April 1, 2023. Hosted by the UW Art Museum National Advisory Board, this annual gala fundraiser provides significant financial support for museum exhibitions, collections, education, and outreach. This year the gala is inspired by cosmic works in the Art Museum’s permanent collection. Our 2023 Gala will be a festive evening of fine food, libations, music, and friendship, all to support the extensive programs of the UW Art Museum.

Cosmic is funded through the generosity of the Klaenhammer Excellence Fund for the UW Art Museum.
