The Neltje Center provides a sanctuary for UW students, faculty and other creatives to unleash their imagination in one of the most scenic areas of Wyoming, near the Bighorns just south of Sheridan. It's a place where writers, painters, and creators of all kinds can find inspiration in the natural beauty and incredible artwork that surrounds them. In this unique environment, arists are empowered to push the boundaries of their craft, experiment with new ideas, and create works that challenge the status quo. The center is named after Neltje, a renowned painter and philanthropist who, in 2001, founded the Jentel Artist Residency. Learn more about the Neltje Center here.

In partnership with the University of Wyoming Art Museum (UWAM) Education Team the UW Neltje Center will host the second of two intensive 2.5-day workshops for K-12 visual art educators in Wyoming. Participant cohorts consist of art teachers working around the state, including Crook, Campbell, Big Horn, Washakie, and Fremont Counties. Topics of study include arts integration, object-based teaching and learning (teaching with art objects and facilitating discussion), as well as dedicated art making time and networking opportunities. The Neltje Center plays an integral role in facilitating this unique opportunity to enrich Arts Education in Wyoming. Interested art teachers can sign up for this program here.

Neltje's interest in art went far beyond her work as a painter. She enjoyed collecting the paintings, sculptures, and ceramics of artists she loved regionally and nationally. She also traveled extensively around the world and collected the work of artists and artisans from Papua New Guinea, Africa, Indonesia and beyond. This exhibition features highlights from Neltje's extensive collection, shedding light on her interests and aesthetic taste.

Intermedia artist Gretchen Ernster Henderson writes across environmental arts, cultural histories, and integrative sciences. At the Neltje Center, she will lead a series of place-based, literary ecoarts workshops to communally replenish WaterWays:
Participants are invited for "Dear Body of Water": a poetic water-harvesting project writing postcard-sized love letters to bodies of water to grow a chorus of care connecting watersheds, locally and globally.
In "Listening with Water: Writing to Reinhabit the World," participants reimagine the liquid presence of water in our words, rippling between lines and poetics of place, pulsing across the planet and under our skins.
This residency activates a year-long collaboration to renew ways of knowing and caring for Water.
