John L. Heywood entered University of Wyoming in 1940. College life was interrupted by Naval service during World War II after which he returned to UW, working his way through school by being a "weekend contractor," taking on as many construction jobs as possible. Following graduation, he was hired by McKee Construction in Los Angeles, California, and spent six years with them, before leaving to become President of Stillwell Construction. Three years later that company was liquidated and he went to work for M. J. Brock. A brilliant maverick, Heywood's technical competence, leadership ability, self-deprecating sense of humor, and innate honesty attracted many clients. Some of his major projects are the 1500-unit luxury resort, Park Newport; the Glendale Galleria; Cal Tech's Beckman Auditorium; Six Flags Magic Mountain amusement complex; and Beckman Instruments Company's corporate offices, as well as numerous projects for the Jet Propulsion Lab. Heywood "retired" several times, only to come back in a new guise. His second career was as a construction litigation arbitrator with the American Arbitration Association.
