Robert E. Tobin is a highly-respected, nationally-recognized authority in the concrete industry. His remarkable career spans 60 years. Tobin's early career included teaching civil engineering at Gonzaga University in Spokane, Washington. Tobin spent 10 years as Vice President of Lightweight Aggregate Processing Company in Los Angeles, California. Following three years as Vice President of Engineering at the Reinforcing Steel Institute, he joined Portland Cement Association (PCA), and was with PCA and its consulting subsidiary, Construction Technology Laboratories, Inc., for 28 years. Tobin spearheaded efforts in the development of methods for pumping concrete and was involved in the early days of "tilt-up" construction. Known as "Mr. Concrete," or "The Ultimate Concrete Technologist" he taught courses at California State University, Los Angeles.
Tobin's practical approaches in the fields of evaluation, testing, and the design of construction materials proved to be effective in the development of several new testing methodologies. A 50-year member of the American Concrete Institute (ACI), Tobin's long list of research publications and presentations resulted in his receiving the ACI Wason Medal. The prestigious award is for significant contributions to the state of knowledge in the industry.
