Dr. Kotlarek specializes in velopharyngeal anatomy and physiology and craniofacial disorders. Her research integrates magnetic resonance imaging and measures of speech production to characterize speech and surgical outcomes for individuals with craniofacial differences. Dr. Kotlarek’s work has primarily focused on describing typical and atypical velopharyngeal morphology and determining the effect of primary palatoplasty on the velopharyngeal mechanism, with the goal of improving speech and surgical outcomes for individuals with cleft palate. Her programmatic line of research has been funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIDCD & NIDCR) and the American Speech-Language-Hearing Foundation.
