What is a Community Health Worker (CHW)?
A CHW works within a community as a frontline agent of change, helping people navigate the healthcare system, incorporate health behavior change into their lives, and work toward overall health and wellness.
What is the Community Health Worker Training Program?
The University of Wyoming’s Community Health Worker Training Program is an online, asynchronous training program that will give you the skills you need to become a fully-trained Community Health Worker on your own schedule. This continuing education program does not require you to become an enrolled student at the University of Wyoming – it is completed in a separate learning system designed for adult learners.
How Is the Program Structured?
The program consists of four mini-courses that can be taken in sequence, or two can be taken at a time (the two-at-a-time option will be available starting in January 2024). Taken one after the other, the program takes 26 weeks to complete. Taken two-at-a-time, the program takes 14 weeks to complete.
The courses consist of approximately two hours of work each week, which includes watching videos, completing readings, and assignments within the online learning system. This work can be completed on your own time at your own pace within each week of the program.

Competency 3: Explain the Causes, Prevention, Treatment, and Prognosis of Key Health Conditions

Competency 5: Exhibit Professionalism in Interactions with Individuals, Healthcare Providers, and Communities
Competency 6: Create Conditions that Facilitate Community-Level Health and Wellness Change
Competency 7: Advance Health Equity by Providing Support to Diverse Clients and Communities
Competency 8: Integrate Public Health Principles into Professional Activities
What Are the Requirements to Enroll?
To apply to the CHW Training Program, please download the program application, complete it, and email the completed form to CHW@UWyo.edu. If accepted into the program, you will need to complete a program enrollment form and provide proof of having completed a high school diploma or GED.
How Much Does the Program Cost?
For trainees who are residents of Wyoming, the program can be completed at no cost - financial support is provided for tuition and school supplies. If you are not a resident of Wyoming, please reach out to us to discuss the cost of the program.
