Two options are available to on-campus graduate students in the Division of Kinesiology and Health:
Thesis
The thesis plan is designed to prepare students for careers in a variety of subdisciplines, including exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise and sport psychology, motor learning and control, and physical activity and lifespan development.
All students complete a set of general required courses as well as a concentration of courses within their chosen ESS subdiscipline. The area of emphasis requires a minimum of 30 credit hours of coursework, completion of a thesis, and a final oral examination. Of the 30 credit hours required, 10 credit hours must be completed in general required courses, and at least 15 credit hours must be taken in HLED and KIN courses.
Non-Thesis
This program involves a minimum of thirty (30) total credit hours of coursework and a culminating paper or case study presentation (experiential learning option) that is developed on a topic selected by the student in conjunction with her or his graduate faculty advisor. The process for composing the culminating paper or case study includes the development of a prospectus and the final presentation of the paper or case study. At least twenty-four (24) credit hours of coursework are required from the Division of Kinesiology and Health (i.e., HLED and KIN courses), which include the nine (9) hours of general required courses.
Current DKH Graduate Students
Graduate Student Assistants are bombarded with rules, policies, and information about college life in general. This handbook will be shared with you at the beginning of your first semester and updated when necessary. It is designed to assist with learning the procedures used in the Division of K&H, College of Health Sciences, and UW.
A contract needs to be established between UW and the internship site. UW has established contracts with many potential internship sites. Please consult with your advisor and the graduate program coordinator to see whether a new contract needs to be established.

The mid-term evaluation is due no later than the end of week 9 (one week after the mid-term).
Site Supervisor/Evaluator - Mid-Term
The final evaluation is due no late than week 16 (one week and internship is concluded).
Division of Kinesiology and Health graduate students are encouraged to apply for up to $800 in funding to participate in professional meetings or conferences on a rolling basis. Examples include but are not limited to traveling to a professional meeting or conference to present research, reviece an award, or participate in UW-sponsored group activties. This support does not include RMACSM, which will be covered by other funding mechanisms.
When additional funding is available, the division may consider offering more than $700 for students who have essential needs. Under these circumstances, priority will be given to students who will attend international conferences, students who have applied for other travel support, students who will receive an award or give an oral presentation, and students who have been in the graduate program longer.
