Alia was born and raised in Jackson Hole, Wyoming. She attended the University of Wyoming for her undergraduate education and obtained a BS in Criminal Justice with a minor in Spanish. Her decision to go to law school was based on an interest in pursuing a career in immigration and international human rights law. Alia has traveled and study abroad which spurred an interest in helping refugees and being involved in human rights law.

Alia chose to be involved with the clinics at the College of Law in order to get practical legal experience before entering the work force and to be directly involved in her specific area of interest in the law. The student director position was appealing to her because she wanted her final year of law school to be focused on the practical application of asylum and human rights law.

Her experience in the clinic thus far has been extraordinary. She comments, "My ability to provide individualized legal assistance while working in the International Human Rights Clinic has made my law school experience extremely fulfilling and beneficial."
