Philip C. Jessup Competition

This year’s Jessup team of Mary Freeman, Brianne Phillips, John Hegarty, Kayla Spencer and Nick Bjorklund, enjoyed unprecedented success at the recently concluded regional round of the international law moot court competition held Feb 14-16th at DU law school.  Our team’s memorials (the briefs) won 1st prize and now advance to the world championships where they are eligible for the Hardy C. Dillard Award for best memorial on the planet. The Hardy C. Dillard Award is presented to teams for excellence in memorial writing by comparing top memorials across jurisdictions.

In the oral competition, the team finished as semi-finalists, beating Colorado and Minnesota (among other schools) along the way, and finishing ahead of Stanford and USC.

The Philip C. Jessup International Law Moot Court Competition is the world's largest moot court competition, with participants from over 550 law schools in more than 80 countries. The Competition is a simulation of a fictional dispute between countries before the International Court of Justice, the judicial organ of the United Nations.

In addition to hard work, preparation and coaching from the College of Law's outstanding faculty members, the Wyoming team's success is due in large part to the practical training the students have received during their education at the College of Law. The UW College of Law boasts a clinic guarantee, providing a wealth of opportunities for "hands-on, real-world" experience through our clinical programs. One such opportunity is the International Human Rights Clinic. Under the supervision of experienced lawyers, Wyoming students have the opportunity to apply what they are learning in the classroom to real life problem-solving and to contribute to human rights education, research and advocacy through select partnerships with leading organizations and institutions around the world.
