German Language, Literature, and Culture

Welcome to the German Section of UW's Department of Modern & Classical Languages. As a department of foreign languages, literatures, and cultural studies, we prepare our students for life and careers in an increasingly global world. Our program in German enables students to combine their language training with interdisciplinary study of the regions where their language is spoken.

To include a language option in the humanities/fine arts interdisciplinary program, students must complete at least 12 hours above the 2030 level. 

German minor requirements:

• GERM 1010 1st Year German I (4)

• GERM 1020 1st Year German II (4)

• GERM 2030 2nd Year German I (3)

• GERM 2040 Beginning Composition and Conversation (3)

• Electives -- 2 credits at the 1020-level or above; 6 hours chosen from German at the 3000-level or above

• Required residency -- at least six hours must be in residency

  Total Credit Hours -- 22
