String majors receive rigorous training from nationally recognized faculty on their instrument and in our ensembles.
The University of Wyoming offers talent-based music scholarships to both music majors and non-majors. These scholarships are awarded by audition (or recording).
Performance Opportunities
University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra
The acclaimed University of Wyoming Symphony Orchestra is a 90-member ensemble that performs major orchestral repertoire, concertos with guest artists, music department faculty and student competition winners, operas, ballets, and musical theatre. Recent tours include trips to Bolivia and throughout the Rocky Mountain region.
University of Wyoming Chamber Orchestra
This small ensemble of 20 to 30 select players performs music of all periods, opera, and musical theatre. The University of Wyoming Chamber Orchestra regularly tours the Rocky Mountain and recently performed at the MTNA All-Northwest Conference in Spokane, WA.
Chamber Music
Many string students play in string quartets, trios, piano quartets, and other chamber music ensembles. Students receive coaching in weekly chamber music classes and play for master classes given by guest artists.
Freelance Opportunities
Many string students play regularly with the Cheyenne Symphony Orchestra, the Fort Collins Symphony Orchestra in Colorado, and the Wyoming Symphony Orchestra.
Guest Artist Master Classes and UW Presents Series
The University of Wyoming hosts an outstanding concert series with internationally recognized guest artists. Many give master classes for University students when they are on our campus. Recent guest artists include Gil Shaham, Edgar Meyer, Paul Neubauer, Regina Carter, Gary Hoffman, the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, the Academy of Ancient Music, and the Miami, Cavani, Emerson and Pacifica String Quartets.
