Letter from the Artistic Director

Dear Cellists and Cello Lovers,

I am very pleased to announce the details of the next University of Wyoming Cello Festival.

We have planned an amazing lineup of guests and events. Due to ongoing COVID concerns, we will hold the festival ONLINE. It will take place on April 24, 2021 via ZOOM.

Our distinguished cellist guests this year are Rick Mooney (National Cello Institute), Natalie Haas (renown Celtic Cellist) and Soeyoen Min (Principal Cello of the Colorado Symphony).

UW Cello Festival events planned for April 24, 2021 will feature Rick Mooney presenting three "lesson classes" on Suzuki Books 1-3; if you or your students would like to perform for Rick, please contact me. Natalie Haas will guide us in a hands-on workshop on the fundamentals of Celtic Cello. Principal Cellist of the Colorado Symphony, Soeyoen Min, will offer her tips on preparing orchestral excerpts. Rick Mooney will close the day with a technique session on one of our favorite topics- Popper Etudes.

In addition, I am thrilled to tell you that Rick Mooney will join us for an additional day of Teacher Training on April 25, 2021. This day will include in-depth sessions designed for cello teachers and future cello teachers, including a guided tour through Mr. Mooney's double stop book, a session on bow strokes in the Suzuki books, a discussion about the Thumb Position Book 2 ("Thumbs of Steel"), and a session on integrating the Mooney books into an organized curriculum. From our planning meetings, I can tell you that Rick Mooney is wonderful – down to earth and so knowledgeable. It's going to be an incredible day! All participants will receive a certificate of participation. K-12 teachers - one credit of professional development may be offered through WYPTSB. More details to follow.

Many thanks to our sponsors: the Wyoming Arts Council, the Music Teachers National Association, UW Fine Arts Outreach, and the UW Music Department. And also, a huge thanks to Colorado cellist Haide Lefebvre for connecting me with Mr. Mooney.

Happy New Year everyone! I look forward to seeing you in April,
