Gov. Dave Freudenthal recently appointed University of Wyoming College of Law Professor Harvey Gelb to the Uniform Law Commission (ULC), also known as the National Conference of Commissioners on Uniform State Laws. Gelb will serve as a Uniform Law commissioner until May 1, 2011.
The Uniform Law commissioners must be lawyers, qualified to practice law. Members are appointed from every state, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. They include lawyer-legislators, attorneys in private practice, state and federal judges, law professors and legislative staff attorneys.
Gelb's articles on business organizations and securities law have been widely published, and he is the author of a book on personal corporate liability. Gelb also serves as liaison to the American Bar Association's Committee on Corporate Laws.
The ULC provides states with non-partisan, well-conceived and well-drafted legislation that brings clarity and stability to critical areas of the law. Their work supports the federal system and facilitates the movement of individuals and the business of organizations with rules that are consistent from state to state.
Since its organization in 1892, the ULC has drafted more than 200 uniform laws, setting patterns for uniformity across the nation. Uniform acts include the Uniform Probate Code, the Uniform Child Custody Jurisdiction Act, the Uniform Partnership Act, the Uniform Anatomical Gift Act, the Uniform Limited Partnership Act and the Uniform Interstate Family Support Act.
Gelb has enjoyed a distinguished teaching career on the University of Wyoming's College of Law faculty since 1979. Selected as the Winston S. Howard Distinguished Professor of Law in 1996, his teaching excellence was rewarded again in 2001 with the receipt of the UW John P. Ellbogen Meritorious Classroom Teaching Award.
In 2004 Gelb was named the inaugural Kepler Chair in Law and Leadership. He teaches classes in advanced business organizations, business organizations, business planning and securities regulation.
