Members of the UW Campus Sustainability Committee say the recent Wyoming Sustainability Summit, with 124 participants from the state and region, met its objectives.
"It provided a venue for sharing sustainability successes and strategies at the individual, community and business levels," says Jill Lovato, Campus Sustainability Committee co-chair.
Presentation topics ranged from production of local foods to energy-efficient building. Taylor Haynes, UW trustee from Cheyenne, gave an enthusiastic kickoff lecture on his organic beef operations, Thunderbasin Land and Livestock Co.
Bob Dixson, mayor of Greensburg, Kan., gave the keynote address on his community's efforts to rebuild with sustainability in mind after a tornado destroyed the small town nearly three years ago.
Closing remarks by Duke Castle featured The Natural Step, a scientific approach to achieving sustainability in businesses and communities.
