Wyoming Gubernatorial Candidates to Debate at UW Aug. 3

July 27, 2010

The majority of candidates running for Wyoming governor will discuss issues Tuesday, Aug. 3, at the University of Wyoming.

The Associated Students of UW (student government) hosts the debate, "Pokes Vote 2010," at 6 p.m. in the Wyoming Union ballroom. The open public forum will include questions from the audience, including UW students. Wyoming Public Radio (WPR) news director Bob Beck will serve as moderator. The debate will be broadcast the following day, Wednesday, Aug. 4, from noon-2 p.m. on WPR stations.

Democrats Pete Gosar of Laramie and Leslie Petersen of Wilson have confirmed they will participate and will debate from 6-7 p.m. Republican candidates who have confirmed and will debate from 7-8 p.m. are Matt Mead and Rita Meyer of Cheyenne; Ron Micheli, Fort Bridger; and Colin Simpson, Cody.

The debate format will be opening remarks from ASUW President Cameron Nazminia and Vice President Liz Brown, followed by introduction of the candidates, written questions submitted by the audience, closing statements by the candidates and a wrap-up. A reception follows.

Because "Pokes Vote 2010" is scheduled during the early evening, Wyoming Union food services Panda Express, CJ's and Rolling Mills will be open for business.

Nazminia says ASUW hopes the statewide gubernatorial race will draw interest in the community.

"The ‘Pokes Vote' candidate debate allows ASUW to reach out to the local community by hosting this event on campus," Nazminia says. "At the same time, this event extends ASUW's community service efforts by teaming up with WPR to help inform voters statewide."

He adds that engaging students in political matters also is important.

"We want students to be informed voters and one way to do this is to provide them an opportunity to learn about the candidates' positions on key issues," Nazminia says.
