Team UW received two major awards at the conclusion of Saturday's Race for the Cure at the State Capitol in Cheyenne.
The University of Wyoming had the largest school group represented, the largest number of participants overall and raised the most funds for the Susan G. Komen Foundation. Team UW signed up 293 team members, with 166 people donating. UW's goal was to raise $2,500, but total dollars pledged far exceeded that number with $8,264 raised to help fight breast cancer.
President Tom Buchanan and Jacque Buchanan served as Race for the Cure honorary chairmen. Sen. John Barrasso and wife Bobbi Brown were masters of ceremonies for the event. More than 2,200 people on nearly 70 teams either ran or walked at the 5k race.
"We thank Tom and Jacque Buchanan for providing exceptional leadership at the statewide level and to those who participated and made pledges to make this a successful Race for the Cure for Team UW," said team co-chairwomen Jo Chytka and Wilma Varga. "A special thanks to the Team UW committee for its hard work and dedication in making this event all come together. It was wonderful to have so many enthusiastic Team UW contributors to this very important cause."
The top six individual Team UW participants who received the most pledges were Milton Ontiveroz, UW communications specialist; Wilma Varga, assistant to the vice president for academic affairs; Michelle Black, Residence Life and Dining Services assistant director; Baillie Miller, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences staff assistant; Linda Waggener, Coe Library senior library assistant; and Heather Warren, Department of Chemical and Petroleum Engineering office associate.
Since its inception in 1982, the Susan G. Komen organization has raised more than
$1.5 billion for research, education and health services, making it the largest breast
cancer charity in the world.
