A brucellosis update and preliminary results of the Wyoming Hereford Association bull test are among topics at the livestock field day Thursday, Dec. 2, at the James C. Hageman Sustainable Agriculture Research and Extension Center (SAREC) near Lingle.
Refreshments begin at 9:30 a.m., and feedlot tours are 10 a.m. to noon followed by a free lunch, says Jim Freeburn, director of operations at SAREC.
Assistant Sate Veterinarian Bob Meyer will present a short update on the recent positive brucellosis tests in the Greater Yellowstone Area and information on current tuberculosis activities within the state. Lee Romsa, state brand commissioner, will discuss registration of brands.
University of Wyoming Extension Beef Cattle Specialist Steve Paisley, associate professor in the Department of Animal Science, will present preliminary reports of the current Wyoming Hereford Association sanctioned bull test.
Professor Dan Rule in the animal science department will provide results from a study that began at SAREC in 2008. Forty Lowline Angus steers were grazed on irrigated pasture that summer.
"The objective of the study was to determine if a fish oil-based supplement could enhance the omega-3 fatty acid amounts in meat from the steers by the time the animals were harvested," Rule says.
Steer growth, pasture consumption and fatty acid profiles of the meat will be presented.
Scott Lake, assistant professor and extension beef specialist, will present information about replacement heifer development and the effects of early weaning on finishing and meat quality.
