New students enrolling for the first time at the University of Wyoming are asked to confirm their enrollment with the university before May 2.
The confirmation requirement applies to students beginning in the 2011 summer or fall semesters. As part of their confirmation, students will be required to make an enrollment deposit that will be applied to their first semester bill.
The confirmation and enrollment deposit are common among universities around the country, says Noah Buckley, UW director of admissions.
"Asking students to make a commitment to the university allows us to effectively manage scholarships and other resources," says Buckley. "Without knowing for sure if a student is planning to attend, we hold scholarships and seats in programs that could be given to other students."
Under this new policy, most students are asked to make a $300 deposit. The confirmation and deposit are required before students can register for housing or can attend New Student Orientation, where registration for classes takes place. Students awarded UW scholarships may have their scholarships and financial aid rescinded after May 2 if they have not confirmed.
Some exceptions apply for students with Trustees' Scholars Awards, or who qualify for Pell grants. Students who confirm and decide not to attend may request a full refund of their deposit May 2.

UW will continue to admit new students and allow late confirmations after May 2, but scholarship offers and enrollment in some programs may not be available, Buckley says.
