In a quick transition from student to teacher, Steven Barrett wrote the book "A Little Book on Teaching: A Beginners Guide for Educators of Engineering and Applied Science," as a basic primer for college-level learning and teaching.
Barrett, associate dean for academic programs and professor of electrical and computer engineering at the University of Wyoming College of Engineering and Applied Science, intended the book to be a useful reference for seasoned professionals and those mentoring the next generation of college educators.
"I consider myself a lifetime student and practitioner of the teaching profession," Barrett says. "My goal is to keep students actively engaged and committed to their own education. I believe students learn best when they are engaged in exciting activities."
The book contains information on effective teaching practices from the literature as well as lessons Barratt has learned along the way.
He purposely avoided involved discussions of learning and teaching theory.
