Ian Gonella of Jackson, a student in energy resource science, won first prize in the recent Laramie 2050 essay contest sponsored by the University of Wyoming Campus Sustainability Committee.
Second place was awarded to Seyed Hamid Reza Sanei of Iran, a graduate student in mechanical engineering. Both received gift certificates to the UW Bookstore.
The object of the essay was to write a description of Laramie in 2050, assuming successful efforts to achieve a relatively sustainable world. The goal was to be optimistic, but not utopian or unrealistic. The writers were to consider material (e.g., energy, food, transport), social, political and economic systems.
The winning essays are posted on the Campus Sustainability website.
