A recently dedicated space within the University of Wyoming Multicultural Resource Center (MRC) will feature artwork by UW students, staff and faculty and will provide an additional place on campus to show works that represent diverse perspectives.
Now on display through Monday, Oct. 15, are prints of six pencil sketches created by Carlos Mellizo, UW professor emeritus of philosophy. Mellizo’s portraits accentuate the most notable features of famous men and women from different backgrounds who have played a significant role in modern history.
Beginning Tuesday, Oct. 16, the MRC will exhibit a three-panel piece by the Movimiento Estudiantil Chicanos de Atzlan (MEChA) UW student organization. The “combination art piece” will be created by UW students to coincide with National Hispanic Heritage Month, which concludes Oct. 15.The piece will include text and drawings that highlight the strengths of Latino culture.
The MRC is accepting applications for additional artwork throughout the academic year. For more information, contact Chicory Bechtel, MRC project coordinator, at (307) 766-6463 or email cbechtel@uwyo.edu.
Located in Room 103 of the Wyoming Union, the MRC is a space provided by Multicultural Affairs, which serves as a “home away from home” for UW students.
“The MRC offers support services for students from all backgrounds in an environment that values diversity,” Bechtel says. “The center can be accessed any time the Wyoming Union is open.”
