The University of Wyoming’s Cap and Gown chapter was among only a few chapters to earn the Golden Torch Award, which was presented to the most outstanding Mortar Board chapters nationwide.

The award recognizing UW among the most successful chapters was presented during the Mortar Board National Conference in Atlanta, Ga.

The award is based on devotion to Mortar Board’s Ideals of scholarship, leadership and service. Recipients must have accomplished significant results in chapter management and contributed meaningful service to their campus communities.

The UW chapter also earned a Project Excellence award for its participation in the annual regional project to clean up the Garden of the Gods Visitor and Nature Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

“It’s been my pleasure to be an adviser to this outstanding group of students for more than 20 years,” says Dave Whitman, who holds the H.T. Person Professorship in the UW Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering. “These students are some of the busiest on campus, but still find time to be active in Mortar Board events such as Top Prof, Tip of the Cap and Torchlight Laurels.”

Mortar Board is a national honor society that recognizes college seniors for outstanding achievement in scholarship, leadership and service. It provides opportunities for continued leadership development, promotes service to colleges and universities, and encourages lifelong contributions to the global community. The UW Cap and Gown chapter was founded in 1933 and currently has 39 members.
