Musical satirist Peter Schickele will kick off the University of Wyoming Cultural Programs’ spring series with “50 Years of P.D.Q. Bach: A Triumph of Incompetence” Friday, Feb. 20, at 7:30 p.m. in the UW College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.
Tickets cost $10 for students; $23 for UW faculty/staff and seniors; and $26 for the public. For tickets and information, call (307) 766-6666, visit www.uwyo.edu/finearts, the Wyoming Union information desk or the Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts box office.
The UW Wind Symphony will join Schickele during his performance.
Schickele is an internationally known composer, musician, author and satirist. He has composed numerous pieces for the National Symphony, the Saint Louis Symphony, the Minnesota Opera, the Minnesota Orchestral Association and other organizations. Schickele also has created compositions for well-known instrumentalists and singers.
It has been 50 years since Schickele first released P.D.Q. Bach’s work. Bach is the pseudonym under which “Professor” Peter Schickele has written a substantial body of satirical music, recorded on the Vanguard and Telarc labels. The music combines takeoffs on musicological scholarship, the conventions of Baroque and Classical music, and a certain amount of slapstick comedy.
Each year, UW Cultural Programs brings a variety of internationally known performers to campus, often at ticket prices much less than at larger venues. Five performances were featured during the fall semester and five more will be offered during the spring semester. All shows are at 7:30 p.m. in either the Performing Arts concert hall or the College of Arts and Sciences auditorium.
“Season ticket holders get to hear some of the most distinguished performers on the music scene and attend receptions to meet the artists,” says Janelle Fletcher-Kilmer, UW Cultural Programs director.
