The University of Wyoming Outdoor Program is accepting applications for this year’s Outdoor Leadership Development Series (OLDS), a yearlong program dedicated to developing outdoor student-leaders.
Applications are due Friday, Sept. 18. Interviews will be held Sept. 21–25, and applicants will be informed of the decision by Sept. 28.
Dan McCoy, assistant director of Campus Recreation, says the focus is on technical skills, leadership theory and practice, and medical training.
At least 12 to 14 participants will be accepted into this free program. Commitments include the following: monthly meetings to discuss leadership theories and hear from guest speakers; one OLDS weekend trip each semester; and shadowing/assisting on at least two Outdoor Program trips each semester. Participants also will take a two-credit course, ENR 2800 (Introduction to Outdoor Leadership), in the spring semester and design a spring break backpacking trip.
“Graduates of the program will have a strong foundation for leading personal backcountry trips and applying to work for camps and adventure programs, or applying their skills to other pursuits,” McCoy says.
Additional information about the program and the application can be obtained by visiting the Outdoor Program in Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center or the website at www.uwyo.edu/op under “Outdoor Leadership Development Series” on the left-hand side.
