Being from the nation’s least populated state suits University of Wyoming student Autumn Olson, of Saratoga, just fine, as she represents Wyoming as the 2016 Miss Wyoming USA.
Olson, a senior pre-dental student in the UW College of Health Sciences, won the recent state pageant in Casper and will now compete in the Miss USA national pageant. The annual competition consists of three segments: evening gown, swimwear and interview.
“Wyoming is very close. When people hear I graduated from high school in a class of nine students, it is just mind-blowing to them,” says Olson, a veteran of pageants who won the Miss Wyoming Teen USA crown in 2012. “Even though we don’t have a lot of people, we have tons of opportunities. We are just as up-to-date as the other states, and we have a hometown feel all over Wyoming.”
She’s proud to represent UW in the national spotlight, too.
“UW offers so many opportunities to the students and residents of Wyoming,” Olson says, adding that pre-professional students can take advantage of a wealth of opportunities.
“They help you with the cost of attendance and, because of the small size, the opportunities are endless here,” she says. “I love the small class sizes; you get a lot of personal attention from all the professors.”
At the recent Wyoming pageant, Shelly McRoberts, of Kemmerer, was chosen as Miss Wyoming Teen USA 2016. She and Olson each will receive thousands of dollars in prizes and awards, and will have the opportunity to compete for the national titles of Miss USA and Miss Teen USA this coming year. In addition, the new Miss USA will go on to represent the United States in the Miss Universe competition, which is televised in more than 130 countries worldwide.
The Miss Universe organization uses its global grassroots reach to empower women to be self-confident and strive to be their personal best. The pageants provide an international platform through dedicated partnerships with charities, sponsors and brands around the world.
