Wyoming’s cultural institutions are invited to nominate what they consider to be their most significant artifacts for the Wyoming State Historical Society’s (WSHS) “2016 Top Ten Artifacts” project.
The program follows last year’s successful effort by the WSHS and University of Wyoming Libraries to identify the top 10 artifacts in the state’s history as part of Wyoming’s 125th anniversary of statehood.
“It was so overwhelmingly popular last year that we decided to make it an annual event,” says Tamsen Hert, UW collections librarian and WSHS president.
She says UW Libraries developed and maintained a website where nominations could be accepted. Judges selected the top 25, and then the public voted on the top 10, which were announced in November.
Nominations will close at 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 15. Guidelines and nomination forms can be found at http://www-lib.uwyo.edu/wyoming/top_ten_historical_artifacts/top_ten_artifacts.cfm.
Any public cultural institution that holds artifacts can participate. After the nominations have closed, a panel of judges will pare them down to 25. From these 25, the public, including school students, will have the opportunity to vote for their favorite 10. The 2016 winners will be announced at the society’s annual meeting scheduled this fall in Buffalo.
