A library display, documentary screening and Gatekeepers training are among National Suicide Prevention/Awareness Month events scheduled during September at the University of Wyoming.
All events are sponsored by the Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center and the UW Lifesavers Initiative. The initiative is UW’s comprehensive suicide prevention program.
The National Suicide Prevention/Awareness Month events are:
-- Monday, Sept. 9-Sunday, Sept. 15: Coe Library book and resource display, second floor of Coe Library.
-- Tuesday, Sept. 10-Thursday, Oct. 10: “Cycle Around the Globe” event. Participants can join the International Association for Suicide Prevention in collectively cycling around the globe by tracking how much they cycle in the gym, in a race or at home. -- Wednesday, Sept. 11: Student mental health screening, sign up here. Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, 6-7 p.m.
-- Thursday, Sept. 12: Student mental health screening, Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, 6-7 p.m.
American Foundation for Suicide Prevention’s (AFSP) “It’s Real” documentary. AFSP’s documentary follows six diverse college students on their mental health journeys. Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, Room 115, 7 p.m.
Candle lighting/moment of silence, immediately following the AFSP documentary screening, candles will be provided. Simpson Plaza, 7:45-8 p.m.
-- Wednesday, Sept. 18: Gatekeepers training, register here. Wyoming Union, Room 202, 10 a.m.-noon. The training is the first step in educating students, staff and faculty on the importance of suicide prevention awareness. The goal is to promote help-seeking behaviors and reduce the stigma of seeking care for mental and behavioral health problems.
-- Wednesday, Sept. 25: Student mental health screening, Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, 6-7 p.m.
-- Thursday, Sept. 26: Student mental health screening, Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, 6-7 p.m.
-- Mondays, Sept. 30-Oct. 21: “Big Sky Mindfulness,” registration required, click here. Half Acre Recreation and Wellness Center, Room 117, 3:30-4:50 p.m. The program helps participants learn how to use mindfulness-based skills, including meditation, to decrease stress and create more life satisfaction.
