A free community gaming and esports meetup is scheduled Friday, Sept. 20, from noon-6 p.m. at the University of Wyoming’s Pokes Pub and Game Room as part of the Wyoming Blockchain Stampede.

The meetup in the basement of the Wyoming Union will offer attendees the opportunity to compete on gaming computers, play games on their own phones and tablets, learn about blockchain and cryptocurrency with board games, play Magic: The Gathering (MTG) and more, says Joey Marchand, event coordinator.

“First, we want everyone to have fun on Friday and meet others who share the same interests they do,” Marchand says. “And we want to encourage learning more about blockchain and how it connects to gaming and career opportunities.”

The event is being promoted by the UW Center for Blockchain and Digital Innovation (CBDI). Partners include the UW Esports Club, UW Blockchain Club and Role for Initiative, UW’s board game club. Role for Initiative plans to manage a free MTG draft tournament.

“The goal is to showcase the vibrant community we have on campus and the value these communities provide Laramie and UW,” says Marchand, a CBDI student intern/researcher from Cheyenne.

Free snacks and beverages will be provided.

An esports invitational competition will be held Saturday, Sept. 21, from 10 a.m.-6 p.m. in the same location.

“We want to showcase the educational value of esports at all levels of academia and the great talent we have in Wyoming,” Marchand says.

Wyoming high schools and community colleges have been invited to compete against the UW Rocket League team.

The event will be streamed on the official UW Esports Club Twitch channel.

The Wyoming Blockchain Stampede title sponsor is IOG. Other sponsors include Custodia Bank, 44 West Mining, Aleo, Block Time Financial, CleanSpark, OwlTing Blockchain Services, VMAccel, the UW Bitcoin Research Center, the UW College of Business, the UW Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science, the UW School of Computing and the UW School of Energy Resources.
