Research Misconduct

What is Research Misconduct?

Research misconduct or misconduct in research means fabrication, falsification, or plagiarism, in proposing, performing, or reviewing research, or in reporting research results.

It does not include honest error or honest differences in interpretations or judgments of data, nor does it include other forms of misconduct, such as sexual or other forms of harassment, misuse of funds, gross negligence in a person’s professional activities, etc.

Responsibility to Report Misconduct

A UW employee who becomes aware of possible research misconduct should immediately report the concerns and/or allegations to their supervisor, department head, or dean, who will consult immediately with the designated research integrity officer regarding the nature of the concerns and/or allegations.

Whistleblower Protections

Federal research misconduct regulations (42 CFR 93) and the UW Employee Handbook protect whistleblowers against retaliation. Every effort is taken to ensure confidentiality for whistleblowers and for those accused of research misconduct.
