Dr. Su Young Choi

Biography:

Su Young Choi received her Master of Public Administration and Ph.D. from the University of Georgia. Her research focus is on public and nonprofit management, nonprofit finance, and volunteerism.

 

Before pursuing her academic career, she worked for approximately 12 years in international development cooperation. Holding her first master’s degree in international relations, she began her career as a Korean government-supported volunteer (similar to the Peace Corps) in Mongolia, where she managed a microfinance project for 2 years. She continued to work as both a policy expert and a field practitioner at the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA) at both its Korea Headquarters and Vietnam office, as well as with various international nonprofits. In particular, she was responsible for developing the South Korean government’s Country Partnership Strategy (CPS) for partner nations. In the field, she developed a $25 million community development initiative in Vietnam and evaluated an HIV/AIDS prevention of mother-to-child transmission project in Kenya, alongside directing numerous other international field development, implementation, and evaluation programs.

 

In 2025, Dr. Choi joined the faculty in the Master’s in Public Administration program at the University of Wyoming, where she teaches courses on public organization theory, public budgeting, and nonprofit financial management.

 

Current Research Projects:

Dr. Choi’s research examines nonprofit management with a primary focus on revenue resilience and generation. Recently, she has also expanded her scholarship to investigate how an individual’s knowledge of the nonprofit sector influences their philanthropic giving and volunteering behavior.

 

Fun Facts:

Dr. Choi moved to Laramie, Wyoming, in August 2025 and lives there with her husband and 2 teenage children. Having grown up in a climate without heavy winter snow, she deeply enjoys Wyoming’s weather and natural surroundings.
