Groundbreaking Choreographer's Work to be Recreated at UW

Aug. 28, 2008 -- The artistic director of the Sokolow Dance Foundation will be in residence at the University of Wyoming through Aug. 31 to help reconstruct one of late choreographer Anna Sokolow's most popular dance works.

Lorry May began work with UW faculty and students this week on "Ride the Culture Loop," which will be presented Nov. 18-22, along with "A Midsummer's Night Dream," as part of the UW Department of Theatre and Dance's 2008-09 season. The project is funded through a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts under the American Masterpieces Great Works Project.

May will return to UW in November to help finish preparations for the performance.

One of the most influential, innovative and inspiring choreographers of her time, Sokolow (1910-2000) created a body of work that blended modern dance and music with theater, poetry and prose. She also formed her own dance company, the Dance Unit, and taught at many studios, colleges and universities across the United States.

The Sokolow Dance Foundation, established in 2003, is the only institution exclusively dedicated to the continuation of Sokolow's legacy.
