Assistance Animal Accommodations

Assistance animals are vital for individuals with disabilities, providing essential support and enhancing their quality of life. There are two types of assistance animals that Disability Support Services works with students to support, Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) and service animals. There are essential differences for students, faculty, and staff to understand with assistance animal legal rights, processes, and procedures between ESAs and service animals.

Emotional Support Animals (ESA):

The University of Wyoming, in line with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) regulations and the Fair Housing Act, recognizes Emotional Support Animals (ESAs) as a reasonable accommodation in residence halls and/or University Apartments.

Emotional Support Animals are comfort and therapeutic animals who alleviate one or more identified effects of a person’s disability.

Emotional Support Animal (ESA) requests, made by students living in residence halls and/or University apartments are processed by the Disability Support Services Office. Please note that the process must be completed in its entirety before an ESA can reside on campus. ESAs who are found to be on campus prior to approval will need to be boarded, at the owner’s expense, until the process is completed.

For information related to the process, responsibilities, and appropriate use of protocols associated with the use of Emotional Support Animals by employees living in residence halls and/or University apartments, please contact Human Resources.

Service Animals:

Under the Americans with Disabilities Act, a service animal is defined as a dog that has been individually trained to do work or perform tasks for an individual with a disability.  The task(s) performed by the dog must be directly related to the person’s disability.

Students with service animals are not required to register with the DSS office, but communication with our office can be helpful in providing additional support.

For information about service animals, please refer to the University of Wyoming Service and Assistance Animal Policy.
