Make a difference in your community and career by pursuing a graduate certificate in community and public health

Public health practitioners play an integral role in every community. Whether you’re a graduate student, practicing professional or aspiring public health worker, you may benefit from formal public health courses.

This online certificate program covers foundational public health concepts, use of epidemiological data, and strategies for building public, political and financial support for public health. Each course includes project-based work so that students leave the certificate program with an evidence-based, actionable and funding-ready project.

About the Graduate Certificate in Public Health

UW’s graduate certificate in community and public health is an online, asynchronous program that is designed for working professionals and current students. It consists of four core courses. All students additionally have the option to add a specialization course.

All certificate students have the option to add a 3-credit specialization course to their certificate. Specialization options include:

  • Emergency prep & response
  • Achieving rural community health
  • Environmental health
  • Food, health & justice
  • One health

All public health courses are designed to help students build an actionable public health project. At the end of the certificate, students leave with an evidence-based project they can put into action in their community.

What can you do with a graduate certificate in community and public health?

An online graduate certificate in community and public health is an excellent way to add marketable skills and formal public health training to your resume. Many of our students are public health practitioners, community organizers and advocates, healthcare workers or those pursuing higher education in the public health field.

The CDC estimates that only about 15% of the US public health workforce has formal public health training. Due to this statistic, many employers are happy to support their employees in education opportunities like this certificate.

Here are a few places our community and public health grads are making an impact:

Community and Public Health Certificate Program Highlights

Our online graduate certificate in community and public health has many benefits to offer prospective students. Here are a few things our graduates have loved about the program.

Online & Asynchronous Curriculum

Our certificate is available entirely online, making it a wonderful option for working professionals and full-time students who need courses that work on their schedule.

Project Based Courses

The certificate courses are designed to help students learn how to design an actionable public health plan. In each course, students work on a chosen public health problem so they can ultimately leave the program with an evidence-based, actionable and funding-ready project.

What I liked best about the graduate certificate in community and public health was the small class sizes... The instructors were very much able to reach out and talk individually...
