Enhance your degree with a Latin minor

Latin is one of the few human languages to have outlived its indigenous speakers. Studying it presents a rare opportunity to explore the expansive thoughts, ideas and dealings of ancient people.

Through UW’s Latin minor, you’ll expand your sense of history’s scale and develop global cultural competencies. In addition, you’ll learn to read, understand and analyze classical Latin texts.

About the Latin Minor

The Latin minor is an 18-credit-hour program that exposes students to a wide variety of courses on the Latin language, as well as poets and philosophers. Students take four required courses and choose additional electives from a list of approved options. UW’s Latin program is one of only two remaining collegiate Latin programs in Wyoming’s state schools and is the only public one left.

Students must be pursuing an undergraduate degree at the University of Wyoming to declare a Latin minor. You do NOT need prior Latin education to pursue this minor.

Latin Minor Program Highlights

Meaningful Projects

As a Latin language student, you’ll engage with the local community and complete meaningful projects. For example, in 2023, our students researched, designed and created two altars for the Día de los Muertos event at the UW Art Museum. During the event, they spoke about the significance of the altars, answered questions and spoke to those in attendance.

Students are encouraged to expand their Latin education by studying abroad and pursuing international learning programs. Our students have studied at the American Academy in Rome, the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the Villa del Vergigno Archaeological Field School. Several students have found their passions while abroad and ultimately pursued careers in the areas they studied, including cartography, archaeology and more.

Study Abroad

Our Latin program is led by Dr. Laura De Lozier. Dr. De Lozier is trained in archaeology, epigraphy, numismatics and philology. She has firsthand experience with ancient Greek and Roman sites in Greece, Italy and the UK. Dr. De Lozier is a graduate of the Eric P. Newman Graduate Summer Seminar at the American Numismatic Society in New York City and an alumna of Newnham College at the University of Cambridge.  She was a museum team member for the Pylos Regional Archaeological Project (PRAP) in Messenia, Greece and a visiting fellow at the American Academy in Rome.
