About the Statistics Degree Program

UW’s B.S./M.S. in statistics is an accelerated program designed for students who want to earn both their bachelor’s and master’s degrees in statistics in just five years. This degree path allows undergraduates to begin taking master’s coursework during their senior year, ultimately saving time and money.

After completing your B.S. in statistics, you’ll continue for one additional year to finish your M.S. degree. You’ll graduate with a strong foundation in statistical methods, ready to jumpstart a career in data science, research and analytics!

Statistics majors may apply to the quickstart program during the spring semester of their junior year. You will submit a college transcript, statement of purpose and three letters of recommendation. Once enrolled, you may count several courses toward both degrees, allowing you to accelerate your course of study. The Registrar's Office will assist you with setting-up your double-counted and reserved courses. Acceptance to the master’s in statistics is conditional until your undergraduate degree is completed and you’ve received your GRE results (which you'll take your senior year).

Statistics Degree Program Highlights

Unique Courses

Our degrees are packed with innovative courses that teach you new ways to manage and transform raw information. One example is our course on data wrangling. The data wrangling class teaches programming skills needed to manipulate, process and structure data into a desired format. This allows you to improve the quality of an information set and make it more useful for consumption, analysis and machine learning.

When students progress to the master’s in statistics, they get access to UW’s cutting-edge NCAR-Wyoming Supercomputing Center (NWSC). This facility houses a world-class supercomputer that UW researchers can use thanks to UW’s partnership with the National Center for Atmospheric Research.

NWSC

As a statistics quickstart student, you'll experience the same highlights and benefits as the students in the statistics master's program, just in a quicker timeline! You'll receive the same flexibility, faculty support, access to the same facilities and have the opportunity for graduate assistantships.

As a B.S./M.S. student, you’ll get hands-on experience through two major projects. In your senior year, you’ll complete a thesis project in which you’ll analyze a dataset and present your work. During the M.S. portion of the program, you’ll take on a larger capstone project in collaboration with an external stakeholder. You’ll analyze real-world data, work with your client and present findings that will guide business decisions.
