Mike Samp
A veteran member of the University of Wyoming Police Department, who has served as assistant chief since 2009, has been named chief of the UWPD.
Mike Samp takes the reins from Troy Lane, who has resigned to become police chief at the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. Samp begins his new duties June 16.
"Mike has done an outstanding job as UW's assistant chief of police," says Mark Collins, UW interim vice president of administrative operations. "His strong record of leadership and broad experience in law enforcement will be a true asset to the University of Wyoming."
Samp, who has been with the UW police since 1997, graduated from Chadron State College with a bachelor's degree in criminal justice. After working as a UW patrol officer, he was promoted to sergeant in 2000. He then became a detective in 2008 and was named assistant chief in 2009.
During his time with the UWPD, Samp developed and supervised the field training officer program, and was a member of the Laramie Police Department special response team. He was a guest instructor at the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. And, in 2010, he graduated from the FBI National Academy in Quantico, Va.
In his new post, Samp will supervise the UWPD's staff of 14 sworn officers and 10 support personnel.
