For University of Wyoming students and employees, registering your bicycle with the UW Police Department is easy: All you need is $5 and five minutes.
The UWPD will hold its annual bicycle registration drive during move-in weekend and during the first week of classes. The department’s booth will be located near the Washakie Dining Center Aug. 22-23 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.; and in Simpson Plaza near the Wyoming Union Aug. 26-28 between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m.
To register your bicycle, just ride it to the registration table with $5. Five minutes later, your bicycle will be registered, UWPD Chief Mike Samp says.
“Bicycle thefts are too common on our campus and, in an effort to reduce the number of thefts, UWPD strongly advises that you register your bicycle,” he says. “By registering your bicycle, UWPD is able to capture all pertinent information required to increase chances of recovery in the event a bicycle is taken. The information taken off of your bicycle will allow us to do a nationwide search for the stolen property.”
Most bicycles that are recovered and returned to their owners have been registered with UWPD, Samp says.
If you are unable to make it to the registration table, you can register your bicycle any time afterward at the UWPD. The department, located on the corner of 15th and Flint streets, is open 24 hours a day. Just bring your bicycle to the front lobby.
The registration is a one-time fee so, if you have already registered your bike, you need not do so again.
For those who are looking for bicycle repair, UW’s Outdoor Program provides tools and an area where students can come in and work on their own bikes. In addition, the program provides a series of bike-tuning clinics so people can learn how to work on their own bikes. The Outdoor Program does not provide service or sell parts for individually owned bikes; it recommends that people who do not know how to do such work seek out a downtown bike shop. The Outdoor Program is located in the portable office building along the north side of the Wyoming Union parking lot.
