Charles Angevine, associate professor in the Department of Mathematics, and Rachel Watson, associate lecturer in the Department of Molecular Biology, were named the 2013-14 recipients of the University of Wyoming’ James C. Hurst Each Student-A Person Award.

UW’s parent organization, Cowboy Parents, established the award to recognize members of UW's faculty or staff who “go above and beyond their normal responsibilities to personalize the student experience and who create a warm and caring environment for students.”

The award honors James C. Hurst, UW's vice president for student affairs from 1981-2000, who is remembered for his warm and caring demeanor, his wisdom and his dedication to student success.

A student who took Angevine’s calculus class as a freshman praised his positive influence on students.

“His class lectures are superb and his delivery of topics was so elaborate and adequate that I hardly faced any difficulty in comprehending them,” the student wrote. “He would always be well prepared. We also had some time to talk about philosophical, scientific and often political aspects in the development of mathematics ranging from some simple analysis to hugely complicated phenomena. This made my student-teacher relationship much stronger.”

A first-year student described how Watson “goes above and beyond the call of duty to personalize the classroom experience for every student.”

“On the first day of class, she asks every student to put their names and the things they love on a note card. By the next week, she has everything memorized and uses each student's individual interests to relate to microbiology and current research topics in the field and in the classroom,” the student wrote. “She inspires me to not only learn the material, but to also apply it to everything in the world around me.”

Other nominees for the 2013-2014 James C. Hurst Each Student-A Person award were Hertanto Adidharma, Maria Almendares, Jeffrey Beck, Harold Bergman, Maggie Bourque, Mary Alice Bruce, Conrad Chavez, Jo Chytka, Jeff Clune, Cathy Connolly, Steven Cox, Kurt Dolence, Andrew Fitch, Patrick Fleming, Scott Freng, Axel Garcia, Mary Sue Hager, John Harty, Sarah Hintz, John Kaszuba, Robert Kelly and Henry Kobulnicky.

Also nominated were Dan McCoy, Jonathan Naughton, Lena Newlin, Julie Norris, Dannele Peck, Kerry Pimblott, Amy Roberts, Zackie Salmon, Richard Schmidt, Shaikh Muhammed Shahid Uddin Eskander, Craig Shepherd, Michael Sommer, John Spitler, Kate Steiner, Susan Stoddard, Allen Trent, Beth Vanderborgh and Cameron Wright.
